A rare musical dialogue between Japan and South India

Reuniting on stage for the first time in more than two decades — and appearing together in the United States for the first time — shakuhachi master John Kaizan Neptune and acclaimed ghatam virtuoso Giridhar Udupa come together for an intimate encounter between two ancient musical worlds at Namba Arts in Ventura. 

Across a rare intimate 90-minute performance, breath, rhythm, silence, and improvisation become a living conversation that transcends borders and cultures.

Emerging from the traditions of Japan and South India, the bamboo flute and clay pot meet in a soundscape that is at once meditative, elemental, and deeply alive. Rather than a conventional concert, Roots & Rhythm unfolds as a transportive listening experience shaped in the moment through spontaneity, presence, and profound musical dialogue.

The artists are joined by David Neptune on Takeda percussion, an original bamboo instrument developed by the Neptune family, adding subtle layers of rhythm, guitar, and bass textures throughout the performance.
